From April 1-23 Altynai Melisova ’14 teamed up with three FLEX alumni to implement a festival of volunteering ‘Hand in Hand’ in Bishkek. The project partners, the AUCA and Green Cook Restaurant, provided the venue and hot lunch for the participants respectively.
The festival consisted of three volunteering missions and a follow-up conference dedicated to career building in which 36 high school students participated. To stimulate more interest the missions were conducted in the form of a competition. In the course of the project the participants gave a training on time management to 357 middle-school students, collected toys for 45 children who are currently treated at the oncology centre and took part in an intellectual tournament prepared by the FLEX alumni.
‘The main goal of the festival was to motivate students to conduct fun and charitable activities and foster their leadership skills. We are so glad that we were able to achieve what we aimed for!’ says Altynai.
The project was covered on the Facebook page of ‘Hi Five Academy’ which is a digital platform where young people can exchange information about educational opportunities and plan joint activities. It was founded by FLEX alumni in March 2016 following up the Central Asia FLEX-Ability Workshop.
